Free Essays on Thomas Shepard

Many people spend their lives searching for answers to their problems or past misfortunes, answers that most people will never find. Seeking out truth is no easy task, especially when you don’t know where to start looking. People die every day, and their loved ones are left behind to ponder why. Death has no scheme, no rhyme or reason or prejudices. So why is it that someone can smoke cigarettes for sixty year and pass away peacefully in their sleep from natural causes, and someone who has never taken a drag get cancer in the prime of their life. Some people would say bad luck, Thomas Shepard would say that it was gods will. He was a man whose life was filled with hardships and tragedy, yet he was able to find peace at times through some of his own, and others experiences, and most importantly, he was able to find peace through God. Throughout much of The Spiritual Accounts of Thomas Shepard, tragedy surrounds his life. He was born into religious persecution, coming from a puritan family during a time in England when anyone who was not an Anglo-Saxon was frowned upon. This did not so much effect his childhood but other misfortunes did. When the plague struck his town of Towchester he was sent away to live with his grandparents in Fossecut. While he was tending to farm animals at the ripe age of four the plague was ravishing his fathers family. It was during this time that his mother passed away, not of the plague, but from some other disease that followed. Shepard then returned home not to the receptive arms of his loving mother, but to his father and his new wife who, â€Å"did let me see the difference between my own mother and a stepmother†(3). Grit and Gritty

Grit and Gritty Grit and Gritty Grit and Gritty By Maeve Maddox The word grit has been in the language since Old English times. It derives from a verb meaning to crush or to grind. Both the noun and the adjective have literal and figurative uses. Ill give the literal definitions first. grit noun: Minute particles of stone or sand, as produced by attrition or disintegration. gritty adjective: Containing, consisting of, or full of grit; sandy. As a verb, grit has the following meanings: to emit a grinding sound to spread or cover with grit to cause the teeth to grind or grate Note: Speakers agreeing to something against their will are said to speak through gritted teeth. Grit has industrial uses. Sandpaper is graded according to grit ranging from coarse to fine. Grit can be added to a final sealer coat to increase the coefficient of friction. Some kinds of grit are fed to caged birds as an aid to digestion. Unwanted grit is another matter:   I noticed yesterday at lunchtime that I had a piece of grit in my eye under the lid. We live in the desert and our  bread  contains a lot of  grit. Walking barefoot on hot or  gritty  surfaces for extended periods can cause foot blisters.    The figurative use of grit to mean, firmness or solidity of character, originated as nineteenth-century US slang. The novel True Grit takes its title from this sense of the word. In the movie, Colonel Stonehill asks Mattie Ross why she chose Rooster Cogburn to help her find her fathers killer:   Col. Stonehill: Do you entertain plans of ever leaving this city? Mattie Ross: Yes, Im off early tomorrow morning for the Indian nation. Marshal Rooster Cogburn and I are going after the murderer, Tom Chaney. Col. Stonehill: Cogburn. How did you light on that greasy vagabond? Mattie Ross: They say he has grit. I wanted a man with grit.    The most common figurative meaning of gritty is, harsh; bleak; unsparingly realistic:   Before Sam Spade, Hammett earned fame for his gritty detective fiction featuring the Continental Op, a nameless private detective in San Francisco. Some video games have been portrayed in a  film noir  style, using heavy,  gritty, dirty urban themes. It [the Hudson Yards area] was once a gritty stretch of Manhattan known for rail yards, warehouses and aging industrial buildings, so desolate it was dubbed The Wild, Wild West.    Thanks to a book by educational researcher Angela Duckworth, grit has become a buzzword in the education establishment. In her book, titled Grit, the word is defined as the quality that enables individuals to work hard and stick to their long-term passions and goals. Courses and techniques are being developed to teach grit. In this context, the adjective gritty is used to mean, having grit. When I was a child, grown-ups referred to such qualities with words like character and gumption, defined as follows: character noun: The sum of the moral and mental qualities which distinguish an individual. gumption noun: initiative, resolution, and effort. In those days, teaching grit at school would have been seen as ridiculous. Children with parents like the ones in my extended family had a start on grit before they ever got to school. Initial business idea Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Initial business idea - Term Paper Example These people are those who appreciate a good healthy snack, and would have the purchasing power to patronize my products. A specialty tea shop needs as much above the line advertisements as below the line efforts. I will select proper media exposure in local newspapers and radio stations, and would go heavy on leaflets and billboards, and in store promotions. Target Market will be identified by first enumerating the qualities of each product to be offered. What are the products and variations to be served? What are the key benefits of these products? Do we put premium on its commercial appeal by engaging competitors in a price war and creating advertising plans that challenge the benefits of other similar products? Or do we want to maintain a certain brand image, and preserve the quality of the products notwithstanding other factors such as pricing? Having done all these, I came to the conclusion that I would like my business to appeal to a certain niche market, but not alienating the popular crowd. I would be serving health products – specialty tea, coffee and confectionaries. I would like my target market to find appeal in the thought that they would be enjoying cost efficient but highly healthy snacks in my tea shop. My target market covers a wide age range. These may be college students who would want to spend quiet time catching up on notes and lessons while having good snacks. I also consider young professionals and adults who now have the capacity to pay for a type of snack that would greatly be beneficial to their health. Since the young professionals and adults are more health conscious nowadays due to the rise in the number of health drinks in supermarkets, they are the kind of market that would enjoy the products that I would offer. Lastly, those belonging to the 40s to 60s age bracket are those who are partic ularly conscious about the food they eat, and would find joy in this new alternative being offered to

Religious studies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Religious studies - Essay Example A religion is a set of beliefs and practices of a community that holds them in the obedience of codified beliefs, believed to be the orders from God, and rituals. It refers to both the personal practices and the rituals carried out by a group to reflect conformity of beliefs and obedience to the Supreme Controller. Various definitions for religion have evolved and many materialistic individuals have tried to push the religion to a separate sector of life only restricting it to the compulsory acts of worship and rituals but, religion is in no way different from one’s actions outside his/her place of worship. A number of religions and its followers, especially Islam, teach their disciples to spend their entire life whether in Masjid (Muslims place of worship) or outside according to the commands of God and stress on the fact that religion is at the heart of life. Whichever religion a person belongs to is evident from his daily routine, doctrines of a particular religion are revealed by the rituals and the actions one performs in his daily life. A Christian would go to a church every Sunday, a Muslim would visit his Masjid five times a day and similarly a Hindu would visit his Temple at prescribed times. Islam has been the most controversial religion in the aftermath of 9/11 attacks on the twin towers, but ironically enough since then it has been the fastest spreading religion throughout the world and especially in the West. Due to this astounding fact Islamic doctrines have been used in the context of the following discussion. Belief in the religious context is the faith in the existence of something supernatural, unseen and unexplainable for an ordinary mind. Conviction is thus the first step and the most basic requirement of any religion. To strongly believe the truth of the existence of God, the fundamental principles of a religion, the Holy Book and the honesty of the Religious Leader who brought the divine message is the doorway towards

It is full of â€Å"new rich† (people who recently got their money.) East Egg, however, is full of people who were born rich. The people that live in these places are the same, but different. Nick lives near a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby. He lives in a huge mansion and is always throwing awesome parties. Nick goes to a dinner with his cousin from East Egg, Daisy, and her husband Tom Buchanan. At the dinner, Nick meets Jordan Baker, a pro golfer. Tom leaves the room for a phone call. The call is from his lover, Myrtle Wilson. Jordan leaves because she has a golf tournament the next day, and Daisy and Tom suggest that Nick and Jordan get into a relationship together. Nick goes home to see Gatsby outside staring a green dock light. Later, Tom and Nick are riding a train to New York, but Tom forces Nick to get off with him to the valley of ashes. Earth Science Final

Describe the difference in stellar evolution of stars the size of our sun with that of stars 4+ times larger than our sun. Include all of the steps and the causes of each step. A nebula, an immense cloud of hydrogen gas and dust, condenses into smaller regions of matter. On occasion, one of these regions collapses under the force of its own gravitational attraction, often triggered by an outside force, like a nearby supernova-an explosion of a star. After the collapse of a cloud, atoms begin gravitating together to form a condensed center. The condensed center is a protestor. As gravity pulls in more gas and dust, pressure builds, causing the protestor core to heat up. Clouds and matter begin to rotate around the protestor and flatten due to their rotation. They surround the protestor like a rotating disk. The protestor continues to grow and its core continues to heat. When the core is hot enough, nuclear fusion begins. The start of nuclear fusion is technically the beginning of a sta r's life. Eventually, when the nuclear energy runs out, the star dies.Depending on the size and mass of the star, it can go through many stages and die in different ways-one of those ways being a supernova. . Choose a region or landscape, describe the landforms in it, the drainage pattern, how the geology influenced the landscape, and the sacrificial processes that influenced it as well. Much of the region of western New York State north of the Pennsylvania border has dendrites drainage because rock layers are flat and there are few faults or folds to divert streams.A region that has prominent parallel and perpendicular faults, repeated folds, or a strong rectangular Jointing pattern will display a rectangular drainage pattern. Anoints are cracks in bedrock along which no significant movement has occurred. They may be related to expansion or regional forces acting on bedrock. ) Streams seek the lowest areas of folds, fractured rocks along faults, or the weakest surface bedrock locat ions. Annular drainage is a pattern of concentric circles that are connected by short radial stream segments. This type of drainage occurs in an eroded dome A radial drainage pattern resembles the spokes of a wheel. Streams flow away. Climate is the other major factor in landscape development. A humid climate favors chemical weathering, which produces rounded, less angular landforms. Most of the hill slopes of New York State are rounded and gentle because f the relatively humid climate. A moist climate also allows plants to grow and protect soil from erosion. Desert areas sometimes have a stepwise profile, with flat hilltops and terraces separated by steep escarpments. The climate of New York State does not change very much from place to place. All of New York has a moist, temperate, mid-latitude climate. Therefore the landscape differences in New York State are not the result of differences in climate. The variations seen in the New York landscape are caused by geological factors. 6. Link Ocean currents and the weather conditions of 3 specific regions. In each case, describe how the weather patterns of the place are influenced by one or more ocean currents.Winds, water density and tides all drive ocean currents. Coastal and sea floor features influence their location, direction, and speed. Earth's rotation results in the Acropolis Effect which also influences ocean currents. Similar to a person trying to walk in a straight line across a spinning Merry-Go-Round, winds and ocean waters get deflected from a straight-line path as they travel across the rotating Earth. This phenomenon causes ocean currents in the Northern Hemisphere to veer to the right ND in the Southern Hemisphere to the left.Rica, Chile lies within one of the driest regions on Earth called the Tacoma Desert. Ocean currents keep clouds and fog Just off the coast, so most rain falls into the nearby ocean. Dethroned, Norway has a temperate climate. Summers and winters are remarkably mild for their l atitude. Rainfall is very heavy. The local harbors are free of ice most of the winter. Seattle, Washington has a mild climate with temperatures moderated by the sea and protected from winds and storms by the mountains. This area is often cloudy with light rain.

Thesis Guidelines

How To Make A Baby Thesis? Or The Format Of A Baby Thesis A baby thesis is like a shortened version of your final, completed thesis. As a result, it contains less parts or sections that a full thesis. However, just because a baby thesis is shorter, and therefore takes less time to write, than a completed thesis, this does not mean you should put less effort into your baby thesis. Writing a strong, well-written baby thesis is important, as it can act as your foundation for your completed thesis. A baby thesis must contain a number of features: Table of Contents A table of contents should show to the reader exactly where the specific sections are within your thesis. Each of the main headings, and any subheadings associated with these, should be listed in your table of contents, along with the page number on which the headings can be found. Introduction An introduction should be imaginative and compelling, and should make your reader care about the information in the rest of your thesis, inspiring them to read on. However, it must also contain a number of facts, such as the aim of your thesis, what inspired your thesis in the first place, and any work done in the past by you or other which you are building upon in your thesis. Findings and analysis This section is fairly self-explanatory – it should contain the raw data which you gained from your investigation, and an explanation of what this data means for your thesis. Recommendations Recommendations should be aimed at any researchers or scholars such as yourself who are investigating the same topic as the one covered in your thesis. It should contain any advice on how to make your investigation more effective or accurate, and advice on how to carry out similar investigations. Conclusion The conclusion of your thesis should be an in-depth summary of your most significant findings, and what these findings mean. It should also be linked to the initial question or statement posed by your thesis, in order to create a fluid and flowing piece of text. *************************************************************************************

A male-centered society Essays

A male-centered society Essays A male-centered society Essay A male-centered society Essay On the other hand, Steinbeck presents Curley’s wife as sexual temptation and trouble-maker. She is a beautiful woman who constantly shows off her beauty to the men on the ranch. She dresses inappropriately/inadequately for a woman living on the farm and being married the boss’ son. When she is seen for the first time in the bunk house, she has â€Å"full, rouged lips †¦. heavily made up. Her finger nails are red† and she wears â€Å"red †¦ feathers† on her â€Å"red mules†. (page 34) By presenting her wearing a lot of red, the writer suggests that she symbolizes danger and love. Being the boss’ son’s wife, men on the ranch see her rather as a dangerous temptation that as a beautiful woman. She cannot provide any sex because she is Curley’s wife and the only thing she can cause is trouble. Curley’s wife begins to be presented in a sympathetic way as the story progresses. Finally, Steinbeck offers a sympathetic view of Curley’s wife in chapter 5 by allowing her to voice her unhappiness and her own dream for a better life. She dies shortly after her confession in the barn reinforcing the men’s vision that there is no place for a woman on the farm. â€Å"Ranch with a bunch of guys on it ain’t no place for a girl, especially like her! † (page 58) Men’s lifestyle at the time meant they were always travelling and never settle down and get married. In the men’s vision this is a world structured around them and brothels. Opposite to Curley’s wife, George’s girl represents the devoted and loving wife or girlfiend, the woman who every man dreams to have as a wife. It seems like the writer wants to suggest that there were also good women in the 1930s society even if they were a minority. George talks with tenderness (gentelness) and regret about having a â€Å"girl† when he talks about letting Lennie away, settle down and have a stable life. Aunt Clara is introduced by George as a caretaker character. She is not Lennie’s mother, but she is blood relative and has taken Lennie to look after him when his mother died. She is presented as a â€Å"little old fat woman† (page 113) but when she is talked about it is in a respectful tone. She symbolises the loving and protective mother, the writer’s vision of wholesome femininity. Moreover, she is an authoritative figure. We can see that in the last pages of the novel when she appears in Lennie’s dream before his dead. â€Å"I tol’ you an’ tol’ you†, she says telling Lennie off because he did another â€Å"bad thing†. In the contrary, Curley’s wife’s mother is introduced by Curley’s wife as the controlling woman, the â€Å"ol’ lady† who â€Å"stole† (page 100) her letter from a guy who promised her that will â€Å"put [her] in the movies† (page 99). Curley’s wife’s mother symbolizes the possessive mother who wants her daughter to comply with the rules of early 20th century of being a wife and being submissive to the husband she was belonging to. She is, also, a protective mother who worried she was â€Å"on’y fifteen† and too young to have an independent life.

Four Censor Words to Keep Straight

Four Censor Words to Keep Straight Four Censor Words to Keep Straight Four Censor Words to Keep Straight By Simon Kewin Dont mix up censor, censure, sensor and censer.   These four words sound very similar when spoken, making them easy to mix up. Censor and censure, particularly, are often muddled as they are related words coming from the same Latin root. However, they do have distinct meanings and you should be aware of what the differences are.   Both censor and censure derive ultimately from the same Latin word censere meaning to assess. However, their meanings have diverged. To censor something (typically a film or a book) means to suppress or remove those parts of it that are considered unacceptable for some reason. To censure something, on the other hand – a term often applied to a person or an organization means to express strong disapproval about it; to criticize harshly or condemn.   So, for example, early editions of D. H. Lawrences Lady Chatterleys Lover, were famously censored, with various words and passages removed. Of course, its fair to say that those responsible for censoring this book would also have censured it if asked : they would have strongly disapproved of it. But its possible to censure something without censoring it. Politicians or companies, for example, can be censured for some perceived mistake without something they’ve written or said being censored. A UK newspaper, for example, recently reported that the food group Kraft â€Å"has been censured by the body that polices City takeovers† for breaking a promise to keep a Cadbury factory in the UK open.   Both censor and censure can also be nouns as well as verbs. A censor is someone who performs the examination of books, films etc, to decide whether they should be censored. A censure, meanwhile, is simply a statement of strong disapproval or condemnation.   Sensor, meanwhile, is always a noun and refers to some device or apparatus that detects or measures a physical property of something. In Star Trek, for example, sensors are routinely used to analyse the physical surroundings of a spaceship or an individual.   Censer, finally, is an unrelated word meaning a container in which incense is burnt during a religious ritual. Its origin is a different Latin word : incendere, meaning to burn. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! Article Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 2

Article Analysis - Essay Example ird hypothesis for this study was that: Attentional factors, rather than peripheral factors are the major contributing factors to accidents arising from drivers using the cell phone while driving (Strayer & Jonson, 2001). The first experiment testing the effect of hands-free cellular phone communication on the interruption of driving applied a sample of 48 participants, all of them students. The sample comprised a balanced gender of 24 male students and 24 female students (Strayer & Jonson, 2001). In the additional control condition study, which sought to assess the effect of listening to a selected passage from a book on tape to creating a dual-task condition, the experiment applied a sample of 20 participants, who were also gender balanced, with 10 male students and 10 female students participating. The second experiment, which entailed the assessment of the specific localized source of interference in driving while using cell phone, was undertaken using a sample of 24 students, who were gender balanced, with 12 male students and 12 female students in participation (Strayer & Jonson, 2001). The threats to validity identifiable in this study include the fact that; the controlled condition experiment for assessing the dual-task interference tried to mimic the real world situation through applying broadcasts involving a mixture of music and speech (Strayer & Jonson, 2001). Nevertheless, such mimicking cannot derive similar results like in a real world situation, considering that in the controlled condition, the elements of interference are just the music and speech broadcasts, while in the real world situation, the elements of interference are much more, sight included. Therefore, the controlled condition may not derive completely valid results. The other aspect that puts the validity of the experiments into question is that; the study involved the application of simulated driving (Strayer & Jonson, 2001). This is not similar to a natural driving setting, thus
